The idea, like many revolutionary games, is extremely simple. You have life points, and a certain budget which you will need to use wisely to defend yourself against the passage of numerous waves of rather dumb enemies. You know where they will be coming into the world, and you know where they will be headed. You even know what type of enemy will be next. The only thing you have to make sure is that they don’t get to the other end of the square, or you loose life points. For every enemy you destroy, you get money, which enables you to invest in upgrades or in new structures for defense.

Desktop Tower Defense is some sort of legend, really. It is rumored that the maker was able to earn 10 000$ a month using advertising, due to the popularity of the game.

About the Beta
Join the beta group here or subscribe to the mailing list at xenoversusbeta-subscribe@yahoogroups.com to get access to the beta. It is fully playable with a limited content set: 9 complete ships and 1 complete level. This is the first in a small set of staged betas. It is set to expire on October 7th. About the Game
Xeno Versus has been developed using a modified TGB v1.1.3. Easily 90%+ of its game code, however, is in script. It has been in development since the final weeks of the T2D Early Adopter program (which is more than a year ago). It is largely made up of resources and source code freely shared by Torque Licensees on their forums.

One of the big plusses touted by the industry was that they would be able to recoup some investment this way, so the prices would go down. Well, everybody with a memory that is longer than last year, can surely make the link with the digital distribution advantage that was the prime selling point at that time. We were told that buying games directly from the publisher, without middle men, would inevitably lower the cost for the end user. Sadly, no such thing happened. After a while, no price advantage was mentioned any more, but the fact that you don’t have a physical CD or DVD that can get damaged, rendering your game useless.

As mentioned on GameIndustry.biz and Eurogamer.net , publishers would use ads on full-price games. There are several reasons I can see. After the costs of the ad network, which charges for every ad shown, publishers are paid for the entire life cycle of the game. This makes the production of non-MMO games more alike to the Massive Multiplayer games. Instead of the pay-to-own, one goes to a pay-per-use model, in fact ‘leasing’ software. This would mean that the party getting the revenue from that kind of license would be very compelled to get the people to play the game as long as possible.
